The legacy of climategate: undermining or revitalizing climate science and policy?

摘要: In mid-November 2009, emails were removed without authorization from a University of East Anglia server and posted to the internet; within 24 h an international scandal was born—alleging fraud by leading climate scientists—which almost immediately became known as climategate. Multiple investigations concluded that no or scientific misconduct had occurred. Despite exonerations, however, email controversy has impacts, both negative positive. On side, small minority American public somewhat larger TV news professionals—mostly political conservatives—indicated made them more certain change is not happening, undermined their trust in scientists. Conservative organizations politicians continue cite justifying opposition government action on change. positive impressed upon science community need for improved communication engagement efforts, many individuals have begun address these needs. It also reminded importance transparency, data availability, strong quality assurance procedures, stimulating review management practices. Although it too soon gauge lasting legacy controversy, if takes opportunity improve its already high standards conduct—as well less well-developed approach engagement—the long-term prognosis good.
