摘要: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to document how Paul Otlet, founding‐father what termed at present as “information science”, attempted provide a complete “image the world” (and reality in general) by establishing scientific discipline he dubbed “documentation”. also aims focus on Otlet represented human knowledge and systematic unified way.Design/methodology/approach A close reading Otlet's primary works some his personal archives was undertaken.Findings Most importantly, it shown that views documentation were immersed cosmological, objectivist, humanitarian ontological framework alien contemporary information science. Correspondingly, alleged affinity with positivism reassessed.Originality/value philosophical foundations origins science are highlighted. Indirectly, relevant ongoing debate realism anti‐realism
