摘要: Purpose: Whether very vigorous physical activity bestows on the participant more health benefits or adverse effects is unclear: we investigated whether men participating in competitive endurance sports middle and old age are at increased risk of heart attacks as well lower-limb osteoarthritis disability. Methods: In our cohort study with an 11-yr follow-up, studied 269 male orienteering runners (mean 48.6 yr baseline; range 37-61), who 1984 were placed among 60 best their master orienteer age-class Finland, 188 nonsmoking controls 50.4 yr; 39-61) classified healthy 20 without overt ischemic disease up until 1985. We followed mortality prevalence questionnaire-reported physician-diagnosed diseases disabilities end follow-up late 1995. Results: Two (0.7%) 10 (5.3%) had suffered myocardial infarctions during age-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) being 0.15 (0.03-0.67) compared (P = 0.0059). At reported knee pain often than did controls, whereas occurrence hip not differ. Disability due to after same everyday activities tended be less runners. Conclusion: top-level athletes having a long-term training background sports, both attack disability low.
