摘要: Laser shock peening (LSP) is applied to potassium iodide (KI) crystals. A selective etching technique used reveal the dislocation structure induced by LSP process, confirming that multiplies and moves dislocations in an alkali halide. Increasing crystal temperature during shown eliminate cracking along cleavage-planes caused process increases range of motion crystal. has long been increase surface toughness fatigue life metals. Having affects mechanical properties ionic KI, we propose studying possible benefit other halide crystals, including scintillators. One potential application might be reducing crack initiation propagation at surfaces Bridgman growth.
