摘要: Lake Nyos, or to be more precise, the upper 38 m of is held back by a natural dam (Figure 1) which, if it were fail, would wreak havoc in valleys north and cause serious flood surge down Katsina Ala into Nigeria. Lockwood et al., [1987], who have been investigating Nyos gas disaster, which killed an estimated 1700 people August 1986, presented paper on potential for disastrous failure AGU Fall Meeting. Part what they said was subsequently reported New Scientist (December 10, 1987, p. 18). They placed record their view that only 400 years old are stated eroding away at alarming rate 1.5 m/yr. If figures correct, then surely will fail within decade two most, there indeed alarm immediate action. However, teams from Cameroon, France, Italy, Japan , Switzerland, Britain, Nigeria, Germany also visited aftermath none reports suggested itself imminent threat.
