摘要: Gaseous sulfide intrusion into seagrasses growing in sulfidic sediments causes little or no harm to the plant, indicating presence of an unknown tolerance detoxification mechanism. We assessed such mechanism seagrass Zostera marina laboratory and field with scanning electron microscopy coupled energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, chromatographic spectrophotometric methods, stable isotope tracing a mass balance sulfur compounds. found that Z. detoxified gaseous sediment-derived through incorporation most occurred underground tissues, where was greatest. Elemental major compound, precipitating on inner wall aerenchyma tissues. Sulfide metabolized thiols entered plant metabolism as well being stored sulfate throughout plant. conclude avoidance exposure by reoxidation rhizosphere are likely survival strategies sediments.
