摘要: Objective. Compared to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA) is considered much more benign and less costly. We sought describe the economic effects of RA OA, in terms indirect nonmedical expenditures, compared nonarthritic controls. Methods. Using our unique population based data resources, we developed a model for estimating comparing disease specific costs among 2 randomly selected, community samples 200 patients each with OA control group individuals from same who do not have arthritis. Data were collected using pretested postal survey. Age sex adjusted comparisons conducted across 3 groups, predictors cost utilization identified logistic regression modeling. Results. There 123, 116, 94 respondents RA, nonarthritis respectively. The average age female-to-male ratios higher groups group. Patients required times days care their conditions nonarthritics (p < 0.0001) incurred significantly expenditures home or child = 0.01) other services 0.001) (i.e., medical equipment, assistive devices, remodeling) nonarthritics. In addition, likely lost job retired early due illness ; most reduced work hours stopped working entirely 0.003) had reduction household family income than either those without 0.0001). Fifteen percent unable get because illness, while 3% only 1% reported this experience 0.001). Logistic analysis revealed that functional status pain score, as well presence significant health utilization. Conclusion. Disease are substantial approach RA. This has important societal implications, given high prevalence OA.
