摘要: A review of the literature pertaining to plutonium and manifold manifestations its toxicity is presented. Plutonium as an environmental contaminant would not, on basis evidence presently available, appear be a serious problem. Since it decays by emission alpha particles presents no hazard in terms external whole-body radiation. lt absorbed plants growing contaminated soil infinitesimal degree, although may fotmd vegetation. lngested Pu retained animal ttssues very small degree. Therefore, relatively high levels dietary constituents can tolerated without producing ponderable tissue burden. Extremely ag are required produce even superficial damage digestive tract. lnhalation airborne particulates remain most effective means entry into higher animals including man. But for this mechanism burden, there must significant concentrattons. The available information indicates that localized regions having deposited air are, except occasional periods, low comparison what considered tolerable concentrations occupational exposure.more » Animal assays have verified little gains mammalian systems from environment. While one should alarmed about Pu2ag environment man, or more specifically human beings themselves, we urge caution drawing conclusions regarding ecological implications. (auth)« less
