摘要: This report is the third in a series of five, designed to investigate detection targets buried saturated sediment, primarily through acoustical or acoustics-related methods. Although steel are included for comparison, major interest (polyethylene cylinders and optical fibres) which have poor acoustic impedance mismatch with host sediment. particular provides brief historical overview sediment propagation models has been presented. Two theories covered: Biot-Stoll theory; wave scattering from random rough surfaces. The debate surrounding observations of, so-called, anomalous penetration also discussed. reports written support article “The by sonar difficult (including centimetre-scale plastic objects sediment” T G Leighton R C P Evans, Special Issue Applied Acoustics contains articles on topic marine Further material can be found at http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/FDAG/uaua/target_in_sand.HTM.
