The socioecological complexity of ecological restoration in Mexico

摘要: Almost half of Mexican territory has been classified as environmentally degraded. The main response for the last 60 years reforestation to combat soil erosion and loss forest cover, mostly carried out on private lands where negotiations with local stakeholders were critical. Despite four legal instruments referring ecological restoration, no specific instrument that defines basic concepts, criteria standards, required actions, or regulations implement evaluate restoration exists. Ministry Environment Natural Resources is now solely in charge only recently have external scientists invited be part process. Following important national international events Latin America Caribbean region, First Symposium Ecological Restoration was held November, 2014. This historic event first action undertaken Mexico meet Objective 3 Global Strategy Plant Conservation, coordinated by National Council Use Knowledge Biodiversity. Although mangrove ecosystems are most endangered ecosystem type Mexico, they not well represented at symposium. In contrast, several other types, such tropical dry islands, received increased attention. Overall, while above-cited policy initiatives steps, needs increase its institutional capacities social organization rural sector regard restoration. Better integration natural participation internationally also needed.
