摘要: During the sliding of solid bodies over one another, frictional work is dissipated which may lead to deformation or damage both surfaces. This paper shows that it not magnitude controls extent deformation, but way in dissipated. Three noninteracting dissipation processes are envisaged: hysteresis losses, plastic viscoelastic ploughing and brittle fracture. Using single point scratching experiments contributions these total have been estimated for a series PTFEs whose mechanical properties varied by exposure increasing levels gamma -irradiation. simple approach allows wear resistance polymers be estimated, predicts correct trend when compared with single-pass abrasion experiments.
