摘要: The oppositely directed magnetic field in the jovian tail is expected eventually to reconnect across current sheet, allowing plasma produced deep inside magnetosphere near Io's orbit escape antisolar direction down tail. Galileo spacecraft found localized regions of strong northward and southward components beyond about 50 radii postmidnight, predawn sector magnetosphere. These pockets vertical fields can be stronger than surrounding magnetotail magnetodisk fields. They may result from episodic reconnection patches magnetotail.
