SUMMARY The histopathological abnormalities seen at autopsy in the brains and corresponding placentas of a consecutive four-year series stillborn infants are presented. After excluding stillbirths with major cerebral malformations, 175 cases 165 were available for assessment. 70 (40 per cent) showed microscopic evidence ischaemie injury, using combination haematoxylin-eosin glial fibrillary acid protein stains. In 62 these brains, periventricular white matter was main site damage. 46 (28 macroscopic infarction, 39 which associated lesions. It concluded that placental infarcts commonly prenatal lesions.
