Factors affecting likelihood of applicants being offered a place in medical schools in the United Kingdom in 1996 and 1997: retrospective study

摘要: Abstract Objective To assess the relation between a range of measures and likelihood applicants to medical schools in United Kingdom being offered place overall at each school, with particular emphasis on ethnic minority applicants. Design Data provided by Universities Colleges Admissions Service 92 676 applications from 18 943 candidates for admission 1996 and 1997. Statistical analysis was multiple logistic regression. Main outcome Receipt conditional or unconditional offer school. Results Eighteen separate were independently associated receiving an offer. Applicants groups disadvantaged, as male applicants, applying late selection season, making non-medical (so called insurance) choices, requesting deferred entry gap year), further higher education sixth form colleges. Analysis individual showed different patterns that predicted offers. Not all disadvantaged effect stable across two years, suggesting structural differences process selection. The degree disadvantage did not relate proportion groups.
