摘要: Background In children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) the prevalence of impaired awareness hypoglycemia (IAH) is uncertain. This study aimed to ascertain this greater precision. Secondary aims were assess symptoms and which these best predict in children. Methods Questionnaires completed by 98 T1DM (mean age 10.6 yr) their parent(s); hospital admission data for previous year collected. Awareness was assessed using two questionnaire-based methods that have been validated adults. For 4 wk, participants performed routine blood glucose measurements questionnaires after each episode hypoglycemia. Principal components analysis determined how correlate; multinomial logistic regression models identified symptom aggregate predicted status. Results The ‘Gold’ questionnaire classified a proportion as having IAH than ‘Clarke’ (68.4 vs. 22.4%). Using method, but not younger more likely require external assistance or admission. Most aged ≥9 yr (98.6%) able self-assess status accurately. Puberty increasing age, augmented scores; duration glycemic control had no effect. In contrast adults, behavioral predictors status. Conclusions IAH affects substantial minority impending may be heralded symptoms. The method effective at identifying those increased risk could used screening tool.
