War Memorials and Memories: Comparing the Philippines and South Korea

摘要: This paper draws from international relations, comparative politics, and Asian Studies in an effort to compare war memorials memories the Philippines South Korea. The analysis begins with a description of how both countries pursue conventional narrative glorious victories, heroic defeats, sacred ground. focus then shifts counter‐narratives that have challenged USA American General Douglas MacArthur. comparisons reveal desire for sovereignty Korea, but also differences heritage geopolitical circumstances shape relations USA. Korea possesses older more warlike birthright than has developed national identity increasingly separate North Filipino memories, conversely, are steeped Catholic spirituality.
