摘要: Arabidopsis and tomato plants mutated in the F-box protein COI1 mediating jasmonate (JA) responses are more susceptible to herbivores laboratory trials, but exact mechanisms of COI1-mediated resistance not known. We silenced by transformation with an inverted repeat construct (ir-coi1) Nicotiana attenuata, a plant direct indirect defenses which against various have been well studied. ir-coi1 male sterile impaired JA-elicited [nicotine, caffeoylputrescine trypsin proteinase inhibitor (TPI) activity] (cis-alpha-bergamotene emission) defense responses; elicited JA treatment (ethylene production flower TPI activity) were unaffected. Larvae Manduca sexta, common herbivore N. gained three times mass feeding on than wild-type (WT) glasshouse experiments. By regularly moving caterpillars unattacked leaves same plant, we demonstrate that larvae WT can grow consume as fast those plants, result underscores role locally induced attacked leaves, importance movement avoiding plant. When transplanted into native habitats Great Basin Desert, suffer greatly from damage local community, includes commonly found attenuata plants. Choice assays field-grown confirmed increased attractiveness for both unusual herbivores. conclude NaCOI1 is essential highlight benefits defenses.
