摘要: Abstract In order to identify the major sources of trace metals (TM) in Portuguese coastal waters, 58 surface water samples were collected during September 1988. The area sampled extended from Tagus Estuary (down a salinity 25) cape Ste Marie on southern coast Portugal. Dissolved metal concentrations fully marine waters ranged 30 250 pM for Cd, 0.7–15 nM Cu, 0.9–20 Zn and 1.8–4.5 Ni. Within (salinity 25), increased 3400 26 14 Ni 230 Zn. large-scale distribution these is dominated by two strong continental sources, both probably linked exploitation pyrite ores. Estuary, TM enrichments can be mostly attributed roasting plant located shore front Lisbon. Concerning south shelf several hypotheses are proposed explain their elevated concentrations. We particularly discussed likely influence Tinto/Odiel rivers 100 km eastward, an well known Gulf Cadiz. These extremely metal-rich because acid mine tailings originating catchment. Between regions, upwelling relatively metal-poor largely contributes dilution inputs. Indeed, exchanges involve fluxes 500 times higher than River flow, renew that thus cleaned terrestrial contamination. Contrary many other systems non-contaminated areas, does not act as source trace-metal enrichment margin waters.
