4 Seed, Fertilizer, and Agricultural Extension in Ethiopia

摘要: Over the past four decades, decision-makers in Ethiopia have pursued a range of policies and investments to boost agricultural production productivity, particularly with respect food staple crops that are critical reducing poverty country. A central aim this process has been increase availability improved seed, chemical fertilizers, extension services for small-scale, resource-poor farmers. While there is some evidence suggest led improvements both output yields, still recognize an urgent need more substantial improvement. This paper attempts synthesize lessons learned from Ethiopia’s experiences providing smallholders access fertilizer, services, identify challenges facing country’s continuing efforts strengthen its input systems markets, recommend policy solutions future. The does so by specifically focusing on three “episodes” recent history shed light potentially complementary, but often conflicting, roles played public private sectors provision services.
