Education, Health and Fertility of UK Immigrants: The Role of English Language Skills *

摘要: This paper aims to identify the causal effect of English language skills on education, health and fertility outcomes immigrants in England Wales. We construct an instrument for using age at arrival United Kingdom, exploiting fact that young children learn languages more easily than older adults. Using a unique individual-level dataset links 2011 census data life event records population living Wales, we find better significantly lower probability having no qualifications raise obtaining academic degrees, but do not affect child self-reported adult health. The impact is also considerable: Better delay which woman has her first child, likelihood becoming teenage mother, decrease fertility.
