New Labour and the Re-making of British Islam: The Case of the Radical Middle Way and the “Reclamation” of the Classical Islamic Tradition

摘要: This article examines the emergence of new forms Islam in Britain between 1990s and present, particular role played by New Labour government (1997–2010) encouraging expressions Islam. It charts development Islamic tradition migration mainly South Asian Muslims 1950s 1960s Rushdie affair late 1980s, before outlining some challenges have faced transmitting traditions a stable state to younger generations. Against backdrop increasing public concern about an inter-generational divide among its supposed allowing radicalism flourish, explores recent attempts develop promote that are “authentically British” challenge radical perspectives. Using case study Radical Middle Way initiative, it looks into uneasy relationship these newer supportive administration, highlighting weaknesses literature focuses on ‘disciplining’ Muslims.
