Fiber Optic Bragg Grating Sensors for Thermographic Detection of Subsurface Anomalies

摘要: Conventional thermography with an infrared imager has been shown to be extremely viable technique for nondestructively detecting subsurface anomalies such as thickness variations due corrosion. A recently developed using fiber optic sensors measure temperature holds potential performing similar inspections without requiring imager. The structure is heated a heat source quartz lamp Bragg grating (FBG) at the surface of detect temperature. Investigated structures include stainless steel plate simulated by small platelets attached back side thermal grease. relationship between FBG sensor response and in material thickness. For comparison, finite element modeling was performed found agree closely results. This shows applications where are already bonded Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) strain measurements can serve dual-use also thermographic detection anomalies.
