摘要: To explore meanings attached to children in Mexican society this article examines two changing aspects of child circulation a widespread reproductive disruption the families Mexico Citys working poor. In late 1890s rapid rise admissions public foundling home was matched by striking increase retrievals. At other end social spectrum growing preference for adopting infants and young indicates that adoption becoming an acceptable means forming among middle upper classes. Changes welfare policy encouraged both trends. This convergence family practice illuminates transitions concepts infancy early childhood informed consolidating ethic protected childhood. These dynamics prefigured emergence protection legislation 1910s expansion services 1920s 1930s. (authors)
