Alter-Childhoods: Biopolitics and Childhoods in Alternative Education Spaces

摘要: In this article, I consider “alter-childhoods”: explicit attempts to imagine, construct, talk about, and put into practice childhoods that differ from perceived mainstreams. critically examine alter-childhoods at fifty-nine alternative education spaces in the United Kingdom. analyze through lens of biopolitics, developing nascent work children's geographies childhood studies around hybridity biopower. focus on two key themes: materialities (non)human bodies; intimacy, love, human scale. Throughout analysis, offer a limited endorsement concept alter-childhoods. Although there exist many construct differently, “alternative” nature those is always muddied, complicated, dynamic. Thus, useful for examining biopolitics geographers more generally—but only when considered as critical tool questioning device.
