摘要: An exceptionally well-preserved specimen of the bauriid therocephalian Microgomphodon oligocynus from Burgersdorp Formation (Early-Middle Triassic, Cynognathus Assemblage Zone) South African Karoo is described. In addition, a taxonomic revision therocephalians southern Africa, based on firsthand examination almost all know specimens, presented. and Bauria cynops are recognized as only valid species bauriids. differentiated B. basis clear-cut morphological features such presence complete postorbital bar, pineal foramen, contribution vomer to osseous secondary palate, comparatively large orbits, lateral fossa posterior portion horizontal ramus coronoid process dentary, reduced number postcanines. Procrustes analysis two best-preserved specimens these allowed recognition further shape differences: M. has taller but narrower cranium, snout, temporal opening more expanded laterally, pterygoid located anteriorly, smaller suborbital vacuity. The mandible higher symphysis, relatively short corpus, laterally-directed process. known Olenekian what probably late Anisian levels in Africa Namibia, whereas restricted early Africa.
