摘要: I present and defend the generalized selected effects (GSE) theory of function. According to GSE, function a trait consists in activity that contributed its bearer’s differential reproduction, or retention, within population. Unlike traditional (SE) theory, it does not require functional helped bearer reproduce; retention is enough. Although core has been presented previously, go significantly beyond those presentations by providing new argument for GSE defending from recent objection. also sketch implications teleosemantics philosophy medicine.
