Respirometry: Anhydrous Drierite Equilibrates with Carbon Dioxide and Increases Washout Times

摘要: Abstract Respirometry is a standard technique in comparative physiology laboratories, with measurements of rates O2 consumption and CO2 production available for hundreds species. A common recommendation when carrying out respirometry that water vapor be removed from the air stream before entering analyzer. Often, this accomplished use chemical desiccants, such as Drierite. However, here we show Drierite has an affinity new completely anhydrous, therefore it adverse effect on washout characteristics gas. Exposing to room reduces affinity, 2‐min exposure at 20°C 50% relative humidity sufficient reduce 99% time by almost factor 4, cost only 5% reduction capacity.
