摘要: Twist states of Bacillus subtilis macrofibers were found to vary as a function the concentration D-alanine in medium during growth. L-Alanine same range had no effect. Increasing concentrations resulted structures progressively more right-handed (or less left-handed). All strains examined this study, including mutants fixed left-hand domain temperature, responded way. twist from tight left- right-handedness could be achieved solely by varying concentration. The D-alanine-requiring macrofiber strain 2C8, which carries genetic defect (dal-1) alanine racemase, behaved similar fashion. combined effects and ammonium sulfate (a factor known influence development leftward direction) using both able undergo temperature-induced helix hand inversion others incapable doing so. In all cases, predominated. A synergism was increasing presence enhanced right-factor activity latter. pulse protocol provided evidence that transient indicative "memory." Chloramphenicol treatment inhibited establishment memory D-alanine-induced right left inversion, supporting existence "left protein(s)" is required for attainment left-handed states. Chemical analysis cell walls obtained right- produced absence D-alanine, respectively, failed reveal state-specific differences overall composition either peptidoglycan or wall teichoic acids.
