Dental and social effects of malocclusion and effectiveness of orthodontic treatment: a strategy for investigation

摘要: Study of the effectiveness orthodontic treatment is complicated by a variety factors, including need for longitudinal, multidisciplinary appraisal and difficulties randomisation, control sample composition. This report outlines recent initiative adopting observational approach with cohort approximately 1000 12-yr-olds, selected disproportionate stratified sampling in order that occlusal features low prevalence, but high interest, would be well represented. In event, 4810 subjects were listed after certain exclusions, 3420 children screened. Using preselected screening criteria, 663 specific an additional 355 nonspecific randomly allocated on pro-rata basis. gave final study population 1018. Baseline dental data included recording caries, periodontal status mandibular function. models obtained analysed using new standardised technique alignment individual teeth. Photographs face dentition collected rating system developed to score facial attractiveness. Social-psychological recorded via self-rating questionnaires, interviews, parental teacher questionnaires peer ratings.
