摘要: The brain mechanism for controlling continuous behavior in dynamic contexts must mediate action selection and learning across many timescales, responding differentially to the level of environmental uncertainty volatility. In this review, we argue that a part frontal cortex known as anterior cingulate (ACC) is particularly well suited function. First, ACC interconnected with prefrontal, parietal, subcortical regions involved valuation selection. Second, integrates diverse, behaviorally relevant information multiple producing output signals temporally encapsulate decision processes encode high-dimensional about value future outcomes subsequent behaviors. Third, flexibly, displaying capacity represent current states valence-, context-, task- action-specific manner. Fourth, dynamically controls instrumental- non-instrumental seeking behaviors resolve outcomes. We review electrophysiological circuit disruption studies primates develop point, discuss its relationship novel therapeutics neuropsychiatric disorders humans, conclude by relating ongoing research medial cortical rodents.
