IMPACTS OF HOME-BASED TELECOMMUTING ON VEHICLE-MILES TRAVELED : A NATIONWIDE TIME SERIES ANALYSIS

摘要: This study estimates the impact of telecommuting on personal transportation using a multi-variate time series analysis aggregate nationwide data spanning 1966-1999 for all variables except telecommuting, and 1988-1998 telecommuting. Three dependent were modeled, in direct per-capita forms: ground vehicle miles traveled (VMT), airline passenger (PMT), sum those two variable, loosely referred to as total traveled. The first part modeled each variable (1966-1999) function conventional representing economic activity, cost supply, demographics. In second study, residuals (1988-1998) number telecommuters. Secondary sources used study. After modeling results are presented, offers several public policy recommendations, based conclusion that appears have statistically significant, albeit modes magnitude, effect reducing travel.
