摘要: The hispid pocket mouse (Chaetodipus hispidus) is one of the most genetically and morphologically divergent species within heteromyid genus Chaetodipus. Four subspecies C. hispidus currently are recognized, h. hispidus, paradoxus, spilotus, zacatecae, ranging from North Dakota south through Great Plains Texas to central Mexico. We investigated phylogeographic structure by examining mitochondrial DNA both freshly collected museum specimens localities distributed throughout range species. also examined 11 cranial characters in 303 assess morphological variation Although morphometric analyses were unable differentiate subspecies, phylogenetic molecular data indicated that 4 recognized not distinct. Instead, our results indicate there distinct clades do correspond but whose geographic limits instead coincide with major geographical features southern United States northern Southern Coahuila filter-barrier (Durango Coahuila), Deming (New Mexico), Balcones Escarpment (Texas) likely have acted as intermittent physical barriers gene flow among clades, which we recognize hispidus.
