Exploring the mother's perception of latching difficulty in the first days after birth: An interview study in an Italian hospital

摘要: Abstract Objectives to explore Italian mothers' perception of latching difficulty in the first days postpartum. Latching is only qualitative item included Breastfeeding Assessment Score (BAS) that has proven be a valid instrument identify women at risk early breast-feeding cessation. Design and setting phenomenologic–hermeneutic study was conducted Mangiagalli Clinic, Milan, Italy. Participants fifteen who received BAS Findings six main themes emerged from interviews: (1) Breast feeding can difficult due both mother newborn, encountered problems are mainly physical. (2) Women have developed different strategies overcome difficulties. (3) Early breast feeding, even if difficult, mostly related positive feelings. (4) Breast-feeding sustains child–mother relationship. (5) Mothers already constructive theories about human colostrum, milk artificial milk. (6) Receiving integrated health-care support education fundamental problems. Conclusions interviews suggest although mothers experience difficulties during feelings seem prevail over negative ones, their fundamental, but this must consistent among professionals. Implications for practice when evaluating ‘latching difficulty', midwives should consider primarily physical Furthermore, sustain lactation, helped elicit as it extremely satisfying, babies occur.
