摘要: Background Lipedema is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed; despite an estimated prevalence of 10% in the overall female population, its cause still unknown. There increasing awareness this condition, but differential diagnosis can be challenging. In article, we summarize current hypotheses on pathogenesis and recommendations guidelines for treatment. Methods This review based publications about lipedema that were retrieved by a selective search MEDLINE, Web Science, Cochrane Library databases. Results The pathophysiology remains unclear. putative causes have been proposed include altered adipogenesis, microangiopathy, disturbed lymphatic microcirculation. No specific biomarker has yet found, currently made clinical grounds alone. Ancillary tests are used only to rule out competing diagnoses. state evidence treatment poor. Treatment generally consists complex decongestive therapy. observational studies, liposuction permanent reduction adipose tissue found relieve symptoms significant extent, with rare complications. statutory healthinsurance carriers Germany do not regularly cover cost procedure; studies high methodological quality will needed before case. Conclusion challenge because hetero - geneous presentation condition lack objective measuring instruments characterize it. provides guide interdisciplinary setting. Research area should focus elucidation development
