摘要: WHILE making experiments on the apparent production of neon and helium during electric discharges, I have noticed an effect which may be interest to spectroscopists. A powerful oscillatory discharge is produced in eight or nine coils wire from two Leyden jars, with a spark-gap about 2 in. parallel, connected large coil run main supply. Set glass bulb 300 c.c. capacity provided below small containing cocoanut charcoal, by side-tube tap mercury pump. After evacuating, heating, “washing out,” hydrogen, when pure hydrogen admitted at fairly low pressure passed, glow bluish colour, shows both spectra; but if charcoal cooled liquid air so that vapour any other impurities are completely removed, brilliant rose only lines. If reduced, however, value somewhere 1 mm., there appears middle ring bright blue zone; whereas former simple complex spectra zone nothing elementary line spectrum; and, moreover, 4861 more intense than red line. Further reduction causes obliteration spreading inwards ring.
