摘要: A localised aggregation of blue whales. which may be pygmy whales ( B . m. brevicauda ), occurs in southern Australian coastal waters (between I39°45'E-143°E) during summer and autumn (December-May), where they feed on krill Nyctiphanes australis ). a species often forms surface swarms. While the abundance using this area is unknown, up to 32 have been sighted individual aerial  surveys. Krill appear aggregate response enhanced productivity  resulting from summer-autumn wind-forced Bonney Coast upwelling along continental shelf. During upwelling's quiescent (winter-spring) period. absent region. surface  swarms associated with 48% 261 whale sightings since 1998, direct evidence feeding observed 36% all sightings. Mean group size was 1.55 (SD =0.839), classes represented including calves. This seasonally predictable system evidently regular ground for whales, careful  management human activities required there.
