摘要: Reduction of carbon emissions from peatlands is recognized as an important factor in global climate change mitigation. Within the SE Asia region, areas deeper peat present greatest stocks, and therefore potential for future degradation fire. They also support most remaining lowland swamp forest its associated biodiversity. Accurate maps deep are central to providing correct estimates stocks facilitating appropriate management interventions. We a rapid cost-effective approach thickness mapping raised bogs that applies model bottom elevation based on field measurements subtracted surface created airborne LiDAR data. In two bog test Indonesia, we find correlate well with derived DTMs (R2 0.83–0.88), confirming often relatively flat. On this basis, map extent depth (> 3 m) new DTM covers two-thirds Sumatran peatlands, applying flat 0.61 m +MSL determined average 2446 measurements. A area coverage 2.6 Mha or 60.1% total eastern Sumatra mapped, suggesting region more common than shallow was underestimated earlier maps. The stock range 9.0–11.5 Pg C alone. discuss how may be used identify priority conservation thereby help prevent major safeguarding propose application method other coastal peatland improved zoning management. demonstrate upcoming ICESat-2 GEDI satellite will likely result that, within few years, sufficiently accurate application.
