摘要: SUMMARY We develop an algorithm quantifying the energy flux of T phases recorded at island stations following major teleseismic events, which we further scale by seismic moment M0 earthquake, to define a T-phase efficiency, Γ. We apply this concept set six recognized tsunami earthquakes, generated tsunamis larger than expected from their conventional waves. Through comparison with nearby reference events waves were same sites, find that earthquakes exhibit deficiency in Γ ranging 1.5 2.5 orders magnitude. This result settles 50 yr old controversy on possible correlation between T-wave generation and genesis. The deficient character readily supports proposed model exceedingly slow rupture velocity for class close examination wave trains jerky least two cases. computation is straightforward real time, could become valuable contribution real-time warning far field.
