摘要: We study the phase behavior of bowl-shaped (nano)particles using confocal microscopy and computer simulations. Experimentally, we find formation a wormlike fluid in which particles have strong tendency to stack on top each other. However, free energy calculations simulations, show that is out-of-equilibrium columnar thermodynamically stable for sufficiently deep bowls high densities. In addition, employ novel technique based simulated annealing predict crystal structures shallow bowls. four exotic new determine their region stability calculations. discuss implications our results development materials consisting molecular mesogens or nanoparticles.
