摘要: Broadening of the potassium resonance lines in absorption by argon and nitrogen pressures from 1 to 40 atmospheres has been observed. Half-widths shifts lines, when plotted against "relative density," yield curves that are straight up about relative density 14, indicating this pressure region Lorentz type broadening predominates. At depart linearity. The results accord with theory, partly agreement previous work. Theoretical contours for broadened spectral have fitted those experiment. Agreement is quite satisfactory, considering approximations made evaluating theoretical curves. Three independent methods calculation constant $b$ (measure van der Waals forces) values 24${(10)}^{\ensuremath{-}32}$ 18${(10)}^{\ensuremath{-}32}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{6}$ ${\mathrm{sec}.}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ nitrogen, respectively.
