摘要: Population-genetic structure and sex-allocation ratios were investigated for the ant Messor aciculatus, a species that conducts mass nuptial flights. An electrophoretic survey on two polymorphic loci revealed excessive homozygosities in populations. Because inbreeding inside nests does not occur, heterozygote deficiency may result from population subdivision rather than assortative during Assuming no inbreeding, simulation based observed genotype distribution study site suggested that, average, breeding swarm consists of alates only 1.7 colonies. This genetic seems to cause local mate competition (LMC), factor can shift sex ratio toward females. The males (0.166 ? 0.030; mean + SE) was significantly female biased lower expected optima queens (0.5) workers (0.25) without LMC. Sex-ratio variability among colonies explained by pattern constant male investment, which is predictable assuming Thus, provides first evidence LMC ants with flights contradicts previous assumptions about swarming ants. results suggest affect patterns
