摘要: Many floral phenotypes are naturally dynamic, changing shape, colour or reward availability as flowers age. Here we explore the dynamic nature of volatiles, with special reference to potential for concerted changes in and scent their functional integration multimodal signals. We review evidence literature survey most appropriate content- efficacy-based hypotheses function such cases. Finally, analyze unpublished data on collected from colour-changing pan-tropical invasive weeds Lantana camara, L. montevidensis Heliotropium amplexicaule. In each species, older, colour-changed emitted reduced amounts linalool its oxides, along common aromatic esters alcohols, whereas abundant sesquiterpene volatiles by calyces plants’ leaves stems did not change. Although these compounds were they known show behavioral electrophysiological–olfactory activity several species butterflies. conclude a discussion conceptual methodological reasons why patterns emission often overlooked, identify opportunities further progress areas.
