The Great Recession and the Migration Redistribution of Blacks and Whites in the U.S. South

摘要: Abtract For much of the last century, South was a net loser blacks and whites to other regions. The end this “Great Migration” occurred around 1970. Since then, is only U.S. region gain both through migration in every decade. As recessions often perturb systems by restraining rates movement altering patterns, paper explores how Great Recession 2007–2009 its aftermath affected established gains native-born within South. We use data from 1990 2000 censuses pooled American Community Survey evaluate these changes. While continued add during recessionary years, key states bucked trend. Georgia, for example, experienced but loss whites. Florida added population all time periods studied lost large numbers educated between 2008–2010. Texas, contrast, no matter their age or education throughout recent recession. This economic downturn, has disturbed long-term patterns A more nuanced set interstate movements emerged, differentiated race groups, which we suspect will some time.
