Hydrogen Effect on the Sound Velocities of Upper Mantle Omphacite

摘要: Clinopyroxene (Cpx) is commonly believed to be the best structural water (hydrogen) carrier among all major upper mantle nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs). In this study, we have measured single-crystal elastic properties of a Cpx, natural omphacite with ~710 ppm at ambient pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions. Utilizing X-ray diffraction (XRD) electron microprobe data, unit cell parameters density were determined as = 9.603(9) A, b 8.774(3) c 5.250(2) β 106.76(5)o, V 255.1(4) A3, ρ 3.340(6) g/cm3. We performed Brillouin spectroscopy experiments on four single crystals along total 52 different crystallographic directions. The best-fit moduli (Cijs), bulk shear as: C11 245(1) GPa, C22 210(2) C33 249.6(9) C44 75.7(9) C55 71.2(5) C66 76(1) C12 85(2) C13 70(1) C23 66(2) C15 8.0(6) C25 6(1) C35 34.7(6) C46 8.7(7) KS0 125(3) G0 75(2) respectively. Compared anticipated an same chemical composition, our results indicate that incorporation has no resolvable effect aggregate omphacite, although small differences (up ~9 GPa) observed in C13, C25, C44, C66.
