摘要: The microbial decomposition of organic matter is a fundamental ecosystem process that transforms and fuels detritus-based food webs, influencing biogeochemical cycles such as C-cycling. efficiency this can be compromised during the non-flow periods intermittent ephemeral streams (IRES). When water flow ceases, sediments represent last wet habitat available to microorganisms may play an important role in sustaining decomposition. However, despite increasing prevalence IRES due climate change abstraction, it unclear what degree subsurface sustain periods. In order gather information, we selected 20 across Catalonia (Spain) along gradient intermittency, where measured fungal biomass by placing wood sticks both surface zones (15 cm below streambed) over course one hydrological year. Our results showed were consistently greater zone than zone, when intermittency increased. Although was main driver biomass, phosphorus availability water, sediment C:N ratio grain size also played relevant roles processing. Thus, our findings demonstrate although OM processing decreases with increased made contribution IRES. Therefore, activity has potential affect maintain functioning.
