摘要: Animal-vehicle collisions affect human safety, property and wildlife, the number of animal-vehicle has substantially increased across much North America over last decades. Systematically collected collision data help estimate magnitude problem record potential changes in time. Such also allow for identification prioritization locations that may require mitigation. Furthermore, systematically evaluation effectiveness mitigation measures reducing collisions. In United States Canada, are typically managed by transportation agencies, law enforcement agencies and/or natural resource management agencies. These activities result two types data: from accident reports (AR data) based on animal carcass counts (AC data). Here we report a survey examined extent to which AR AC Canada. While substantial percentage DOTs DNRs collect manage data, many them do not. or this different only partly overlapping reasons. addition, use reporting thresholds, have varying search effort, partial overlap parameters recorded. differences occur between DNRs, oftentimes one same organization collects inconsistent as certain be recorded ‘sometimes’. inconsistencies comparability ultimately usefulness data. Before an program is initiated improved, it important illustrate needs benefits such collection. We list most provide considerations initiation improvement collection programs.
