摘要: Adiabatic demagnetization is currently gaining strong interest in searching for alternatives to (3)He-based refrigeration techniques achieving temperatures below 2 K. The main reasons that are the recent shortage and high price of rare helium isotope (3)He. Here we report discovery a large magnetocaloric effect intermetallic compound YbPt2Sn, which allows adiabatic cooling from 2 K down 0.2 K. We demonstrate this with home-made refrigerator. Other materials, example, paramagnetic salts, commonly used same purpose but none them metallic, severe limitation low-temperature applications. YbPt2Sn good metal an extremely weak magnetic coupling between Yb atoms, prevents ordering above 0.25 K, leaving enough entropy free use cooling. volumetric capacity guarantees also power.
