摘要: Background. Available data indicate that diabetes mellitus leads to elevated cost of healthcare. This imposes a huge economic burden on households, societies, and nations. As result many Ghanaians, especially rural folks, resort the use phytomedicine, which is relatively less expensive. paper aims at obtaining information plants used in Ghana treat mellitus, gather present evidence-based available support their uses mechanisms action, identify areas for future research. Method. A catalogue published textbooks, monographs, theses, peer-reviewed articles Ghanaian traditional medicine between 1987 July 2018 managing was obtained used. Results. The review identified 76 plant species belonging 45 families are manage mellitus. Leaves were part frequently most preparation (63.8%) mostly as decoctions. Majority belonged Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Apocynaceae families. Pharmacological 23 have undergone vitro studies. Forty been studied using vivo animal models. Only twelve bioactive compounds found with both preclinical clinical records further medicinal showing antidiabetic effects did so via biochemical such restitution pancreatic β-cell function, improvement insulin sensitivity by receptors, stimulating rate secretion, inhibition liver gluconeogenesis, enhanced glucose absorption, G-6-Pase, α-amylase, α-glucosidase activities. Conclusion. contains including pharmacological properties action well models investigate them. It also provides gaps can form basis investigations development into useful medications effective treatment
