摘要: Background: Patient characteristics may help select the most appropriate type of permanent vascular access for haemodialysis. The aim this study was to assess influence patient-related variables on outcome radiocephalic fistulas. Methods: Over 3 years 107 consecutive patients underwent formation a fistula haemodialysis access. Patients receiving prosthetic, ulnar, brachial or secondary fistulas were excluded. followed prospectively until failure, transplantation death, minimum 6 months (median follow-up 24 months). Results: Primary patency 69 per cent at 12 and 56 months. Endovascular surgical intervention led limited improvement in 63 Regression analysis showed that failure more common women (P = 0·02), diabetics 0·03) young 0·02). By life-table analysis, primary significantly better 0·01) men non-diabetics, while similar all age groups. Conclusion: One-third fail irreversibly within 2 years. Failure is likely diabetic patients. © 1999 British Journal Surgery Society Ltd
