CARDIORESPIRATORY SYNDROME OF OBESITY (PICKWICKIAN SYNDROME) IN CHILDREN

摘要: The clinical, pulmonary and hemodynamic findings in two boys with the Pickwickian syndrome are presented. In contrast to adults this syndrome, all four children thus far reported have been mentally retarded. Both of our cases were cyanotic, lethargic congestive heart failure at time admission. They both exhibited polycythemia, cardiac enlargement, electrocardiographic evidence right atrial ventricular hypertrophy, decreased function without obstructive disease arterial hypertension. Symptoms cardiorespiratory subsided following weight reduction. pathophysiologic mechanisms alveolar hypoventilation, hypertension, patients complex discussed. clinical recognition is practical importance because: 1) it a preventable disease, 2) changes reversible reduction 3) because dangers oxygen administration.
